Here I share a technique that helps me soften the grip of compulsions. When you feel compelled to idly scroll your phone, mindlessly snack, etc., insert a backwards count from 5. When the count's done, do whatever you want.

No guilt or expectations. Just count. You'll find that doing so helps break our mental & behavioral looping, allowing us to feel more autonomy & freedom.

Variation: when you're done counting, whatever you decide to do, say "I'm choosing this." Don't dwell. Just say it.
