distinguishing thought from inner voice (4:58)
We know the experience of hearing a voice within. Sometimes we recognize the voice is clearly our own, the same voice we speak with from the heart. Other times it's clearly not. Other times it's hard to tell.
Here I discuss this dynamic. I describe techniques for distinguishing between our inner voice and our chattering thoughts, using a grocery store trip as an example. The upshot: our inner voice is an expression of our present intention, while thoughts are a more variable and mysterious occurence, less faithfully conveying the wishes of our heart. The better we get at telling them apart, the better we become at impulse control and self-awareness.
